	Pietro Varoli is found dead in his home. He is the president and trainer of the local volleyball team that has recently become the provincial champions. The evidence is stacked against Viviana, a young ex-player who is now confined to a wheelchair, because of a road accident while in the team's bus that was driven by Varoli. With resentment as her motive, and more some evidence at the scene of the crime, there seems to be no doubt of her guilt.

	Paola Salvarani is found in her home with her skull smashed in. Natalina saw a man running from the scene of the crime, and thanks to her testimony, the Carabinieri track down the alleged murderer: Giovanni Antonelli, a murderer on temporary release from jail. The man confesses to Don Matteo that he had a secret relationship with the woman, but says he is not her killer. Meanwhile, the townspeople protest the crime. They feel threatened and resort to vigilante justice, mercilessly harassing the man. To make matters worse, there is the victim's fiancé, Alessio Leoni, proprietor of the woollen-mill where the woman worked. But working at the same factory is also Alessio's cousin, Pia Leoni, and Daniela Danzi, who were Paola's best friends and are Alessio' top assistants in the running of the company.
