A Day on the Set
Friday, 26th July, 2002

11 a.m.: all the extras arranged by Antonello, the Production Supervisor, meet in Don Matteo's kitchen, as usual.

Once everyone has signed the "contract", they are sent upstairs to be inspected by Elena, the Costume Designer.

Upstairs, in the wardrobe storeroom, the men who are to be Carabinieri extras get into their uniforms...

...while Elena, here next to Nino Frassica, checks out all the other extras and then has them change into clothes they brought with them; the colours for the day are brown and beige.

11:45 a.m.: everyone is brought to the set in the Piazza Grande, where the "baskets" have already been delivered so they go ahead and eat.

Meanwhile, the crew is preparing to film the first scene, for the episode "Natalina innamorata", directed by Leone Pompucci.

The actors get ready.

People start to stop and watch so Andrea, the Production Assistant, has to put up a tape to keep them back.

Flavio Insinna discusses something with Giovanni, the Cameraman.

The camera is set up.

The Steadycam arrives.

Everything is okay with the monitor.

Leone discusses the scene they are about to shoot.

They film the first scenes with the Carabinieri.

Between takes, the actors study the shots on the monitor.

1 p.m.: Terence arrives on the set!

Terence and Natalie speak with the director.

The set ups are studied...

...and the lighting, by Fabrizio, the Director of Photography.

Even the director checks out the set up, every now and then.

And then everyone goes to watch the monitor.....

....another scene is filmed.

Pietro, the Still Photographer, does his job.

The extras, hanging around the set, watch what's happening.

After all the scenes that were scheduled for the Piazza Grande are filmed, everything is moved to a small street in Gubbio to continue filming in a Lottery outlet.

3 p.m.: All the equipment is moved and reassembled on the new set.

The extras wait their turn...

...as do the actors, too.

Terence looks over his lines.

While they are filming in the Lottery outlet, Maurizio is outside sealing up the film already shot.

And in the theatre around the corner, there's Bruno, the Set Builder, with his assistants, preparing the set for the next day (episode "Paura in palcoscenico" directed by Andrea Barzini).

By now it is late, and the day of filming ends in Don Matteo's parish house where a room has been converted into a prison visiting room. Don Matteo meets with the woman who runs the Lottery outlet.
