It's all Terence Hill's fault. No, I'm just kidding. However, in part its true. Yes, because I was skeptical, undecided whether to accept a television series such as this one. One of the reasons was that I would have come into the project late. I had had the idea a year before, but then I had abandoned the project to do other things. It came back to me like a boomerang, and it's Terence Hill's "fault". The screenplays were already written or almost and ince I am, above all, a screenplay writer, I felt a little uneasy. But Terence Hill insisted that he wanted me. The producer, Alessandro Jacchia, threatened me with physical violence if I didn't do the series. He invited me to dinner to meet Terence. I met him, we talked and a vague understanding was established. But I still felt undecided, without saying so. That evening we ate and drank together. Maybe we drank a little too much. So, when Terence and I left the producer's house, we were a bit drunk. Quite drunk really. We crossed Via dell'Anima and stood in front of the statue of Pasquino.
Once here I figured that since I was drunk it would be easier. So, I said: "I'm doing the series with Terence Hill if Terence Hill doesn't play Terence Hill but lets me direct him as an actor......and not as a star". He told me that he wanted to be an actor, he wanted me to direct him because he knew how much I loved actors and expected the best from them. That's how he trapped me and I ended up accepting. And now I'm happy because I was able to do what I had set out to do. I'm satisfied and I like the series. If others like it too, so much the better. Otherwise, that's life! But what Terence and I said to each other that night in front of the statue of Pasquino came true. Terence is an actor, a good actor. If I may, I'll even go as far as saying he's also a great man. I thank him and Jacchia. It was certainly worth it. |
