What is Don Matteo like? "Don Matteo is a joyful person. A person that never loses his faith, not even in the darkest moments of desperation, because with God everything is possible".
What do you find convincing about this character? "What I liked most about Don Matteo is that he is a detective and a priest. In other words, he has an adventurous side which I like and which I try to find in all my characters".
Did you suggest any changes on the original screenplay? "At first I wasn't too convinced about Don Matteo's self-confidence, the fact he had very few doubts, so I suggested he become more human, and especially more tolerant".
This is not the first time Terence Hill dons a priest's cassock. Will the audience think you have a "vocation"? "I wore one for Don Camillo. However, there really isn't much difference between the duster coats of my Western characters and the cassock. Both are roles which are somewhat "legendary", "distant" and "mysterious".
When preparing the character did you look to any film or literary character or to someone that you Knew? "No. I simply tried to make him believable, sincerely enthusiastic both as a detective and as a priest".
Back
Don Matteo is a special kind of priest. How did he develop his vocation and also become a detective? "He was able to maintain the curiosity he had as a child".
For your audience Terence Hill will always be "the other half" of Bud Spencer. What kind of a relationship do you now have? "Excellent. We talk often and sometimes we get together. We've made 14 movies together and the feeling we have as a couple is difficult to define. We compensate one another. Our last movie together was in 1995, "Botte di Natale".
What movies do you feel were your most impotant? "Dio perdona io no", the first with Bud Spencer, "Trinità", "Il mio nome è Nessuno" directed by Sergio Leone and "Don Camillo".
