	During a school-reunion party at the home of Giulia Chimentis, her husband is found dead in the garden. Nico Caronna is found near the body with his hands covered in the victim's blood. He was an employee of the victim but had been recently fired. There seems to be no doubt: he is the guilty party. Cecchini must investigate on his own because Anceschi was a guest at the party, is an ex-classmate of Giulia's, and according to some, he was her lover. But neither Don Matteo nor Cecchini suspect the Captain of murder.

	Monica Tini thinks she has leukaemia, and as she is leaving the lab where she has just read the results of the medical tests, she meets the magician Kaspar. He is a travelling magician, previously accused of being a charlatan, able to delude and deceive people by taking advantage of people in trouble, of their credulity and their need for easy answers. The Carabinieri talk to him, but they cannot do any more than that. Meanwhile, after a therapeutic session with Kaspar, Monica repeats her medical test and finds out that she is perfectly healthy. The woman claims it is a miracle, and becomes infatuated with the guru. She neglects her husband and children in order to devote herself to Kaspar and his healing powers.
